The Importance of Reading
-Why We Should Never Stop Reading-
by: Giovanni Padin
THINK about the last time that you opened a book. Do you remember? Was it a day ago? A
week ago? Or, a year ago? These are things we really need to consider if we want to collectively
develop our understanding of the bigger world around us.
NOW think about the last time that you went on your phone, tablet, or watched Television.
Unfortunately, most of us would say that the last time we went on our phone or tablet was
sometime throughout the day- not related to anything that is productive and only eats up the time
we have each and every day.
We must consider these things and understand that the most precious thing each of us human
beings have is time. The way we spend our time reflects on what we value most in this life.
But, what happens when we spend our time, especially our free time, on things that are not useful
or productive to us?
The answer is simple, we miss out on one of the greatest opportunities that we humans have been
given, the ability to read.
People of all ages will come to blame that they are to tired or they don’t have enough time in
their busy lives to be able to take a break to stop and read- even if it’s only for Fifteen Minutes a
day. This is an issue because these excuses turn into habits. Those habits turn into your behavior.
Your behavior turns into who you are. But, why is this all so important?
Reading has been slowly declining year after year- at a slow, yet constant rate. In the United
States alone, 23% of adults have admitted to not reading any type of book in the past year.* This
is something to be concerned about and something we really have to consider moving into our
future.
The only way that we can increase our knowledge is by training our brain by doing beneficial
activities like those of reading. Only then, can we really become better readers and value this
ability that was once only available to select few- hundreds and hundreds of years ago.
The more we read, the more we learn. The more we learn, the better we can become knowing
that we were given such a special gift that makes us what we were meant to be- people with
stronger lives encouraging and engaging those around us.
