AstraZeneca Vaccine in Australia
Saanvi Kunisetty
So far, Australia has administered approximately 885,000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses to the residents, and a pattern has begun to emerge that several recipients are dying from blood clots. Though it is not many people, (only 1 in 295,000), it has become impossible to avoid. Recently, a middle-aged woman experienced thrombocytopenia and died of it four days after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine. Regardless of the connection of her death to the administered vaccine, many officials have been refuting it. They have instead been saying that it was simply the result of her complicated pre-existing medical conditions. Still, Australia decided that it would not administer the AstraZeneca vaccine to anyone under the age of 50. This is mainly because the blood clots have only been found in people of ages over 50. Hence, the country joined the ever-growing list of nations banning and suspending usage of certain coronavirus vaccines. It remains to be seen how other vaccines affect the country of Australia.
