The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon Review by Aditi Patel

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time was a very subtle book, that you don’t even really realize that you finished reading it until the end. The whole plot of the novel is also quite confusing, because of the way that it is narrated. The narrator and main character of the book, Christopher, has autism and is very smart for his age. One day, he saw the dead body of his neighbor’s dog, and suddenly gets on the case. He ends up in police custody, and is released and told that he is not allowed to look into the case. His father tells him the same. The novel starts abruptly, and it takes a little time to actually realize what is going on. Christopher then narrates that he has been writing down his investigation in a book, which is the book that is being read. Christopher’s mother is dead, so he lives with his father. He always wondered what had exactly happened to her, but his father would never tell him. He’s fifteen years old, but is preparing for a test so that he could get into a college. The story continues on, with Christopher on the search of who killed the dog. The novel is really confusing while reading, because it’s from Christopher’s perspective who has a lot going on in his mind. One minute he’s talking about the dog, and the next he has changed the topic. Although confusing, the novel is really interesting at the same time. I would recommend this book, because it was really good when you come to the end, and actually figure out what the whole story was talking about.
