Technology Usage in Classrooms

As schools are shifting their way of teaching from chalkboards to computers, it is important to know the possible consequences of technology in classrooms. Digital learning provides students with more fun and engaging ways to study rather than the old-school paper and pencil. In addition to this, digital learning platforms help students collaborate with others and teach them the value of teamwork. Despite all these advantages, technology in classrooms also leads to cheating, additional costs, and dependence to technology. In conclusion, the disadvantages of the use of technology are more important and should not be overlooked.

Excess usage of technology makes it easier for students to cheat off of other students or off of the internet. Students can easily message their friends or browse the internet to get a solution to a problem that they are stuck on without needing to think about it and solving it on their own. This “can lead to lack of essential skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making” (Nadine). These are the crude skills of survival that students would need later in their lives, so schools must limit the use of technology to ensure students have these crucial life skills.

Many schools do not have good budgets which can make integrating technology much more challenging. There are big costs associated with providing each student with their own tablet or laptop which many schools cannot afford. This means only the top level schools can provide their students with tech which gives the lower level schools a massive disadvantage. But, even if schools can afford tech for their students they must also consider if they could have spent the money elsewhere.

The last con of tech in schools is that students get dependent on technology. The usage of search engines like Google and Safari can lead to “The Google Effect”. The Google Effect is when students tend to forget information that they can easily find by browsing the internet. When students believe that some information can be found on search engines, they make less effort to try to remember it. As a result, they won’t be able to remember the information when Google isn't there to help them.

Overall, even though technology usage has grown significantly over the past decade, teachers should also consider the down side of this. Technology needs to be implemented in a way that ensures that students are learning and not being distracted. It is up to the schools to examine the good and the bad of tech and decide how they are going to use it in their classrooms.
