 Sway With Me Book Review

Sway With Me by Syed M. Masood is a book about a high-schooler named Arsalan who lives with his grandfather because his mom passed away and his dad left him. Because he was brought up by his grandfather and was homeschooled for a long time, he’s very different in comparison to the others at school. The way he dresses, how he speaks, what interests him- it all appears peculiar to others when he joins highschool. Before his mom died, she told him to find someone who would be with him forever, and he hence seeks out an arranged marriage with the help of a girl in his school named Beenish. Beenish asks him for a favor- to participate in a scandalous dance with her in order to ruin her older sister’s arranged marriage with a rude and cocky man. Hence, as the two become closer and help each other out, they develop feelings for each other. This book was a great read- it’s perfect for anyone interested in a light romance and comedy read. It also tackles many social norms and controversies as well, though. For starters, it questions the typical role of women in some Indian communities and marriages. Should they always be the one to cave in to their husband’s wishes? Should they always be the ones to leave their education, job, career, dreams, and aspirations because of marriage? Do girls have to act modest and engage in only socially-acceptable activities in order to be considered disciplined and mannered? It was interesting to see how the author presented these ideas in Arsalan and Beenish’s parents and families, and how the two worked together as characters to challenge the social norms that people attempted to force onto them.
