In the 43rd Minute of Denmark’s opening game of Euro 2020 against Finland, Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field. The game was immediately suspended for Eriksen to get medical attention. The medical personnel gave CPR and used a defibrillator to attempt resuscitation. Danish doctors said that Eriksen “was gone.'' Fortunately, the Danish staff was able to bring Eriksen to consciousness and transport him to a hospital where he was stabilized.
Overall, this situation was painful to watch live. However, I did learn some things from this. I tune into these games and forget about all other problems in my life. Due to this, I don’t think I fully understand the people I am watching on my screen are in many ways the same as me. I tend to think they’re superhuman because of their professions. This whole situation was a reminder of the fragility of life and how even the people on my television are real humans. Furthermore, the ability of the medical team to give quick and efficient treatment was incredible. I think some people, including myself from time to time, don’t fully grasp the ability and overall improvement of medicine. Within 90 seconds, these professionals identified the problem and where to save a human life. These professionals should be regarded as heroes because of their abilities and accomplishments.
Lastly, the support that was shown for Christan Eriksen across social media and other platforms was heartwarming to see. Cristiano Ronaldo, Jesse Lingard, Mesut Ozil, and the official accounts of teams tweeted their support. Romelu Lukaku showed their love and support for Eriksen in the middle of the game. He celebrated his goal by going to the nearest camera and saying, “I love you, Christan, stay strong!” Regardless of rivalries, the sport they play/support, or any other factor, people came together to show love for Eriksen. This incident was larger than just sports. It was a matter of life and death, and I am glad people understood this. In summary, this horrendous situation had some silver linings especially, since Christan Eriksen is stabilized and well.
