 Facts about Eid


  1. The literal meaning of the word ‘Eid’ means festival in Arabic

  2. It is celebrated twice a year. Eid al-Fitr which is known as “Smaller Eid” and Eid al-Adha which is known as “Greater Eid”.

  3. Although they are similar in name they are significantly different. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. Eid al-Adha is at the end of the Hajj, a pilgrimage to the city of Mecca.

  4. Eid al-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of the 10th month in the Islamic calendar.

  5. Eid al-Adha is celebrated on the 10th day of the final month in the Islamic calendar.

  6. Eid al-Fitr is celebrated by paying respects to Alla, and having a feast to break the fast. People are also given gifts. 

  7. Eid al-Adha is celebrated by praying at a mosque and listening to sermons. They also wear new clothes and sacrifice an animal.

  8. The White House has a tradition of holding an Eid Dinner and the end of Ramadan.

  9. These holidays are celebrated by 1.8 billions Muslims. 

  10.  The first Eid celebration was in the year 624 C.E. after Prophet Mohammed won the battle of Jange-Badr.
