Prince Philip
Saanvi Kunisetty
This past Friday, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, passed away at age 99. His wife, Queen Elizabeth, was devastated by this, but found consolation in the fact that he died a peaceful death. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip had always had a loving and supportive relationship since they were married at ages 21 and 26, respectively.
Though Prince Philip’s death hurt many, he was not liked by everyone. His efforts to bring monarchy into the 20th century were disputed quite a bit, and he was known for sometimes making subjectively discriminatory and offensive comments. In addition, he was criticized many times for a so-called “dysfunctional” family by many. He despised this type of spotlight, which particularly arose in the situation of Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s divorce. Prince Philip was pained when his son, Prince Charles, revealed that Prince Philip used to constantly belittle him in front of other relatives and friends when he was young.
Regardless, Prince Philip has done much good, specifically for the nation of Britain. He had worked to restore a tarnished and exhausted Britain after World War II. In addition, he has done a lot for the common good, devoting himself to protecting wildlife and building playing fields for young British players. It’s obvious that his life has had a lasting impact on the world, and that he will always be remembered by many.
