Sarah Evarend by Protima Banerjee

 Sarah Evarend

Over the past week, a tragic event in London has set off a movement to bring justice for the victim, Sarah Evarend. She was a 33 year old female who always looked at life in a positive manner despite the many hardships she faced. On Wednesday, March 3rd, Sarah was coming home from a friend’s house at around 9:00 pm. However, she never came home. She had made a call to her new boyfriend around that time, but after that no one heard from her. She wore bright clothes and walked in well-light streets, just as women are informed to do to stay safe. A 48 year old police officer, Wayne Couzens, was arrested on March 12 for her kidnapping and murder. Her remains were found near the woods, and her cellphone was recovered from a nearby river. Women across the U.K. have, rightfully, become furiated by this case and have begin sharing their own stories regarding sexual harassment. As a young girl, it disheartens me that females are subjected to such terrible circumstances. It scares me that even through taking precautions and following all the guidelines, we are still not safe. The police are heavily criticized for breaking up numerous vigils held in honor of Sarah, as they violate COVID-19 guidelines, and even arresting the participants. The next day, protesters gathered outside the London police headquarters and outside the Parliament. Sarah Everand was someone who had her whole life ahead of her, and someone who did not deserve her faith. Women, and even men, across the world need to realize that the only way for things to change is by speaking up against this injustice.
