Review of Haikyu (Anime) by Chandler Wang

Haikyu is a fun and exciting anime about a sport most people probably don't have much interest in - volleyball. Like many of the show's viewers, I had no interest or real knowledge of volleyball going into the show, but I was drawn in regardless. With consistent and engaging storytelling, lovable and unique characters, and electrifying matches, Haikyu makes volleyball a sport you can cheer for. Karasuno, a high school once considered a volleyball powerhouse, has fallen from grace, and the new players are disillusioned by the pitiful state of the volleyball program. A laughingstock of the sport, the Karasuno volleyball team must prove themselves on the court. It's a classic setup, and by no means a unique one, but such a simple and straightforward premise makes for a direct but gratifying story. Hinata Shoyo, the protagonist, is short but overflowing with passion and love for the sport. His energy and determination help push Karasuno to reach their goal of reaching and winning the national tournament. Karasuno's team is filled with various personalities, and nobody is left behind in Haikyu. The show makes sure that each character is explored and finds their time to shine on the court. The show gives nuance and identity to each member of Karasuno, but doesn't stop there. Players from other teams, coaches, managers, even people cheering in the stands have personalities and stories. Haikyu makes the game come alive as it explores the motivations and thoughts of the people on and off the court. As games unfold, Haikyu makes sure that each has depth and uniqueness. Each game teaches you something new about positions, strategy, and technique as teams bring their own approaches to the game. Volleyball becomes a game of float serves, guess-blocking, quicks, and setter dumps. Through it all, somehow, as you watch players train and play and experience loss and defeat, there's some inexplicable, powerful urge to get in the game. Slowly but surely, the show absorbs you into the sport, and gives you a single thought - "I want to play." Haikyu is a fun, solid show about a sport that most people probably never gave a second thought to. 8/10.
