China’s Crackdown on Hong Kong
Saanvi Kunisetty
China has been instilling many harsh laws, rules, and regulations in one of the great metropolitan cities- Hong Kong. They have strictly and swiftly enforced their authority over the people, starting with the security law that was enforced last year. This sudden implementation of authority was sparked by many wide-scale protests throughout Hong Kong since 2019 which caused unrest and concern that the people might attempt to overthrow the Chinese government. In the perspective of Beijing, the capital of the country, the crackdown on Hong Kong has irrefutably worked. It is evident that protests have lessened since authority began to be imposed, and many pro-democracy activists have quit, are in jail, or are likely to be put in jail after a trial. In contrast to this, many countries, including the United States, doubt the sincerity of China’s actions, and do not have faith in what the country is doing. In the future, we can predict that this type of crackdown will be seen in Taiwan, a country that widely refutes China, but which China considers its own. But this crackdown on Hong Kong has only urged people in Taiwan to further dispute China’s actions.
