Review of the Umidigi X Phone by John Yang

Review of the Umidigi X Phone by John Yang

My phone stopped working over a year ago and I never got a chance to get a new one until the most recent Black Friday, where I got the Umidigi X smartphone off of Amazon for $150 (Originally $200).

Basic specs:

CPU - MTK Hello P60 4xCortex-A73, 2.0GHz&4xCortex-A73,2.0GHz

OS - Stock Android 9 Pie

RAM - 4GB

ROM - 128GB

Battery - 4150mAh

Ports - Dual SIM/1 SIM + 1 SD Card, USB-C Charging and data, headphone jack

Display - AMOLED, 6.5” diagonal

Umidigi isn’t a hugely popular phone - it’s certainly not a name that’s immediately recognized to most. The phones are made in China and the company Umidigi is based in Shenzhen. For the price, I feel like I’m getting great value from the phone. It’s equipped with a triple camera, one 48MP, one 8MP, and one 5MP. The front-facing camera is 16MP. It also comes with an in-screen fingerprint sensor, infinity display and a teardrop camera notch. The camera quality is great, and the phone feels hefty and solid in the hand. I’ve been running apps with mostly no problems, but I did have my Gmail app crash once during setup. The great thing about the OS is that it’s the totally stock, clean version which meant that it didn’t come with any bloatware or native ads. The display is nice, and it comes with a pre-installed screen protector and thin case. The back of the phone is glass and has a really unique iridescent color which varies from blue, green and purple depending on the angle you hold it at - the “breathing crystal” color option. 4GB is more than enough memory for the phone, especially considering that it’s enough for most chromebooks. The battery has been lasting well, but that’s likely because I just got it and the battery life will deteriorate over time. One negative thing about the phone is that it didn’t come with a pair of headphones, which I would have wanted. The phone also supports Google Pay, which is pretty standard but helpful during these cash-free times. I’m also not a huge fan of the vibration style - it’s very intense and almost buzzy in a sense. I would prefer a more gentle and smooth vibration. All in all, I think the Umidigi X is again a great value phone, and I’m very satisfied with it right now. It will likely perform worse as time passes, but I have high hopes for it.
