Uncanny by Sarah Fine Review by Aditi Patel

I was in the library one day, when I saw Uncanny. I picked it up, and immediately got engaged from the first page. Uncanny, as we know, means something mysterious or strange. That is exactly what this book is about. The story revolves around a girl, Cora, who doesn’t remember anything that happened when her stepsister died. Her stepsister, Hannah, was drunk and had fallen down the stairs which led to her death. Cora was also drunk, which made her forget everything that had happened. Everyone acts weird around Cora, especially Hannah’s dad, who thinks that Cora killed his daughter. Hannah’s dad gets a robot that looks exactly like a human, named Rafiq, who would stay with Cora and try to uncover her secrets. No one knows what had happened that night, how Hannah had died, who killed her, and everyone is on the search to find out. Fine did an incredibly wonderful job portraying the reality of humans vs robots, and how robots would be like in the real world. The whole novel is engaging from start to finish, and you’re constantly trying to figure out how Hannah was killed. I would definitely recommend this book, and it’s the best book I’ve read.
