Cirque du
Freak by
Darren Shan Review by Aditi Patel
I
was looking for a book in the library one day, when I saw this book. The cover
itself seemed pretty interesting. The plot of Cirque du Freak is about a boy, Darren, who becomes a vampire in
order to save his best friend, Steve. The friends had gone to the “Cirque du
Freak” earlier, and were amazed when they had seen such extraordinary people
performing. One act involves a spider, which Darren later steals from the show.
Steve comes over to Darren’s house, and gets bit by the spider, and goes into a
coma-like state. Darren goes back to the show, in order to find a way to save
his best friend, and then learns that he must choose to become a vampire to
save him. The plot then becomes more interesting to actually see what Darren
does and the decision he has to make. I really enjoyed the book because
everything that happens connects throughout the whole novel. For example,
Darren had said in the beginning that he was always fascinated by spiders,
which then causes him to eventually steal a poisonous spider. This book is part
of a whole series, and one of the books has also been turned into a movie. The
descriptions throughout the novel are also very intriguing. The whole story
from start to finish is very compelling, and I would really recommend this book
to anyone who enjoys horror.
