Reflections on 2015 and thoughts for 2016 by Shweta Murali

2015 has passed by quicker than we can all imagine, and with 2016 just around the corner, many of us are looking forward to starting with a clean slate. Here are some tips to make 2016 the best it can be:

·  Try to stay fit. The most popular New Year’s Resolution is to get in shape, and most people end up breaking this pact by the time Valentine’s Day rolls around. The biggest reason for this is that they set unrealistic goals. Saying you want to lose 10 pounds in a week is highly unattainable and will not get you anywhere. Set achievable goals and work towards them. Don’t starve yourself or work out during all your free time, but try to maintain a healthy body so that you feel good about yourself.
·  Find a new hobby. We need to push ourselves to try something new, and it can be as simple as writing poetry, or as extravagant as learning a new language. Anything you want to learn that you find pleasure in is a great way to enjoy the New Year and feel accomplished.
·  Make a bucket list. Write down a list of things you want to do in 2016. Some examples are 1) watch a sunset on the beach 2) go skydiving 3) run a marathon. It can be anything, from something small to something daring and unbelievable. Just know what you want to do and strive to do it. At the end of the year, when you are able to check off everything on your bucket list, you will feel great.

While we will be upset to say goodbye to all the memories in 2015, just remember that we have a fresh start now. Change is a good thing.

Miss Telall 12/15/15

SBPL readers, it’s your own advice columnist- Miss Telall, presenting two more entries. Having issues or just want to talk? She’s always up to offer advice, so be sure to email her at MissTelallSBPL@gmail.com, and check the SPBL blog for a reply addressing your problem. All entries are always ANONYMOUS, and no problem is too big or too embarrassing for Miss Telall to tackle!

Dear Miss Telall,

Recently, what with all the homework and activities I have to do in school, I never have time to read anymore. I used to read a book almost everyday- now, I barely have any time for myself; and, when I do have time, I find I’ve become too distracted and stressed to really get into a book- there’s just so much to do! How can I regain my love for novels?

                                       Sincerely,
                                Losing at Literature
Dear Losing at Literature,

I know the feeling. When you're younger you have so much time to read books, but now that we're older we have to spend our time more wisely. That doesn't mean giving up your childhood obsession with novels. When you get into a busier mindset sometimes you're more distracted and it's harder to concentrate on a book. My advice is to train yourself to get back into the right mindset. Decide that you're going to spend a small amount of time every single day reading a book. It could be 30 minutes or even an hour-  whatever you can squeeze in at lunch time, in the morning, or just before you go to bed. This way, you’ll get back into the habits of an avid reader. That calm mindset you have when you're reading a book is not something you can force. So, find a calm and quiet place that you are not distracted in. I would suggest going to the library-there are many quiet areas specifically made to be comfortable to you when you are reading. Think plush chairs, absolute silence, and general tranquility. On top of where and how you read your books, it's also the important to think about what kind of books you're reading. Ask the library staff for recommendations on topics you are learning about in school or just have always been interested in. The teen room has a great selection of fictions that are especially stocked because they have proved popular with other people. Start to carry that one novel around with you wherever you go-that way when you're bored you can pull it out and start to read. Be realistic! You're different person now with a different time schedule. It's OK to have periods when you can't read as long as you make an effort to do so! Overall, don't see it as a chore- reading is a beautiful and enriching thing, but also something that should be practiced! Have fun!

                                        Sincerely,
                                       Miss Telall
Dear Miss Telall,

Being an only child, I was raised very dependent on my parents. While some children were already doing things like cooking or cleaning for themselves as teenagers, my mom and dad provided and completed chores for me. That was fantastic, except now I’m almost eighteen, and worried that I won’t be able to do much for myself or live on my own after high school. I need major help!

                                       Sincerely,
                             Definition of Dependency

Dear Definition of Dependency,

While many kids would have loved to have a childhood with no responsibilities, you are realizing that this lifestyle put you at a disadvantage amongst your peers. However, it’s not too late to start developing the skills you’ll need to live a rewarding, independent life. Put together a detailed list of everything that you need to learn- from cooking to cleaning to managing money.  Decide who can help you in each area (friends, parents, television, the Internet) and figure out a realistic time frame in which you can learn new skills and test them out. Additionally, ask your parents if you can do more chores or help them around the house. They’ll love the extra help, and will teach you how to take care of yourself in the future. Try not to expect perfection as fast as possible. The more you practice (and make mistakes), the more you’ll learn from each experience.

                                  Sincerely,
                                Miss Telall

Holiday Open House By: Riya Sen

Holiday Open House By: Riya Sen
South Brunswick Public Library hosted the spectacular Holiday Open House on Saturday, December, 5th, 2015. Full of games, crafts, activities, and more, the Holiday Open House was organized to support the “Friends of the Library.” As people participated in various games and won prizes in the Hexagon room, I could see joy on everyone’s face.  Every child stopped by the Children’s Area to get a balloon animal, henna tattoo, or creative face-paint and walked out with a smile. Next to the Information desk, kids and parents enjoyed some delicious snacks provided by “Friends of the Library,” and scanned handmade crafts that were being sold. Teen volunteers helped in every corner and a constant buzz of chatter

filled the library. It felt as if the whole community was bonding and sharing a great time together at this wonderful holiday event!

Kobe Bryant: Basketball Legend Faiz Syed

Kobe Bryant:  Basketball Legend
Faiz Syed
The 2015-2016 basketball season will be remembered as the one that last saw Kobe Bryant tearing opposing teams apart on the court.  The thirty seven year old basketball legend announced that his twentieth season in the NBA this year would be his last before he retires.  This comes as a great surprise to many basketball fans across the nation.  Even though Kobe Bryant’s legacy is at its strongest on the west coast where his team plays, his dominance in basketball is admired as far away as on the east coast by fans like myself and others.  The news of his retirement leads me along to speculate about the future of basketball without him on the court.  Predicting the future is an easier task once one has analyzed the past, and before too much consideration is given to the future of basketball without Kobe Bryant, I want to share some of my views about Kobe Bryant’s career in the NBA.
I view Kobe Bryant as the superstar that bridged two eras of basketball history.  When he began his career at age eighteen, Kobe Bryant came into an NBA that was centered on the legendary Michael Jordan.  Kobe Bryant has said that Michael Jordan mentored him when he came into the NBA, and he has also said that he wants to be like Michael Jordan.  Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant only faced each other on the basketball court for a short period of time before Michael Jordan retired from basketball.  Since that point, the NBA has been Kobe Bryant’s league, and he has lived up to his statement of wanting to be like Michael Jordan.  In fact, Kobe Bryant has surpassed his mentor in some aspects of basketball.  Kobe Bryant has scored more points in his career than Michael Jordan.  Kobe Bryant’s 81 points in a single match also surpasses Michael Jordan’s high of 69 points in a match.  Kobe Bryant once came into the NBA with aspirations of becoming like the great basketball players that he competed against, and now young superstars come into the league with hopes of one day playing as well as Kobe Bryant.  I view Kobe Bryant as the bridge between two eras because he acquired knowledge of basketball from the Michael Jordan era and like a bridge, he transported it through his playing style to the modern era, where that knowledge is still alive in those young players who continue to emulate his playing style.
What I admire most about Kobe Bryant is that not only has he established an acclaimed career for himself, but he has also helped his Los Angeles Lakers team reach the NBA finals seven times.  There is no I in team nor is there one in Kobe Bryant.  He used his brilliant and athletic playing style to benefit his team, and his team has been one of the most successful teams in NBA history while he has played for them.  He has won the NBA finals five times out of seven opportunities and has been the NBA most valuable player once in his career.  He offers coaching advice to younger players on the team and even advises the coaches of the Los Angeles Lakers from time to time.  He also makes sacrifices to help his team win games.  In a recent statement, Kobe Bryant had said that although this season will be his last, he wants younger players to get more playing time than him because they will give the team a better chance to win in.  Kobe Bryant should not only be remembered for being an NBA MVP, but he should also be remembered for being a team player who has helped his team win five NBA championships.

Rithvik Nuti Book Review: The Novice

Rithvik Nuti
Book Review: The Novice
Fletcher, a disliked and a not so popular teen is about become one of the most well known teens of his age. Starting as an apprentice to a local blacksmith in an unknown village, he becomes the best summoner of his age in the entire kingdom of Hominum. Fletcher, the  main character of the book is an adopted child by a blacksmith  named Brendon. His life was normal, working in the forge from day till night with some breaks in the day until one day, when a creepy looking soldier gives him a summoner’s book. The summoner’s book has all the spells, incantations, scripts, diagrams, and the description of how to summon a demon. Summoning a demon is not a very common skill among people, especially among commoners.
Not trusting his luck, Fletcher tries to summon a demon, and succeeds in summoning a red solomon. This conflict raises the question about his lineage. Is Fletcher really a blacksmith commoner, or is he related to a noble bloodline because only a noble can summon demons as commoners do not have that power in them which it takes to summon a demon. Also, on the same day he summons his demon, Fletcher is charged for a crime he does not commit. This is why, to stay alive, he has to run away from his village to prevent himself from getting arrested. Constantly on the pursuit, he arrives in the major city of Corcillum where the Vocan Military academy for  the nobles is there. In Corcillum, he meets Arcturus, who is impressed by Fletcher and sends him to the best academy in the kingdom, the Vocans. In this school, Fletcher is curious, excited, and extremely grateful for the opportunity he just received and tries his level best to succeeds in the school. However, his tries are suppressed by the noble kids who are present there. He also meets different races such as dwarves, and elves. These cause him to walk on a different and a dangerous path. There he meets Sylva, Othello, and Tarquin.
Now Fletcher has to choose the right friends, and allies to stay alive and succeed in the school. Will he able to do it? This exciting and adventurous book by Taran Matharu is  perfect for anyone who likes young adult fantasy. It has many ups and downs with cliffhangers which will make the reader grip their seats and to not lose interest. The Novice, the first in the trilogy has many realistic social problems. For example, the inequality between the different social classes is an important theme in this book. Also, racism and suppression of  the different and the not so popular races is demonstrated throughout the novel.
This debut novel is recommended for anyone who loves Pokemon, and all the games in that genre. If you are someone who love to read books like Harry Potter, Eragon, The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and are comfortable reading them, The Novice is a perfect book for you because many of  magical information, demonology, and the spells are included. There were many things I liked in this novel. For example, the book is very descriptive and detailed throughout. This prevents readers from getting confused very often because there is a huge amount of information in this book. For example, the author has a description of every demon, its powers, its feature, who can summon it, how it works, etc,. Also, I loved the cover. It is so eye catching, and so descriptive that the cover itself is gives an insights about what the book is going to be about. It has all the major componenets that on might get confused if they do not see the picture properly. The one thing I did not like about this book is the amount of struggles the character has to face. Due to the class inequality, Fletcher had to face many struggles and a lot of disappointment. Even though it is very inspiring and focuses on the social issues of prejudice, it is a little bit sad to read at some parts. Nonetheless, it is wonderful and a suspenseful novel that teens would love to read.

Upcoming Football Match between Jets and Giants Faiz Syed

Upcoming Football Match between Jets and Giants
Faiz Syed
Sunday December 5 is an important date for football fans who support the local New York teams.  The Jets and Giants will play each other in a football match that takes place every four years.  From what I have observed, most of the football fans in the central New Jersey area support either the Jets or the Giants, and tensions between fans of both teams is common.  Tensions will be even higher prior to and after the match between these two New York teams.   Friends who support the other of the two teams will be found arguing with each other over who they think is going to win the match.
I have watched both teams play this year, and from what I have seen, it seems as if the two teams should be an even match for each other.  In terms of their records, the Jets have one more win than the Giants, but they have both shared similar elements in their seasons.  Both teams have lost to the Philadelphia Eagles and both teams have also lost to the New England Patriots by just one possession.  Similar results against common opponents is a pretty good indicator that shows that the two teams play at the same level, and this will make the match between the two teams on Sunday even more fun to watch.
The New York Jets are coming into the match on Sunday after a victory over the Miami Dolphins.  The Jets dominated the game and should be coming into the game with confidence after their victory.  The Giants on the other hand, will be hosting the match coming off of a tough loss to the Washington Redskins.  The Giants will bring determination with them to the match, hoping not to lose again.  The Jets and Giants will both be looking for a win in the match on Sunday to keep their faint playoff hopes alive, and this game will be a turning point in the season for both teams.

Your Music Describes You Written by: Sneha Narayanan

Your Music Describes You
Written by: Sneha Narayanan

Music helps you relax subconsciously. After facing the reality of life, just kicking back and listening to your favorite songs helps you return back to your true self, not the person the society changed you into that day. School and work makes a lot of people stressed, tired, and even frustrated, myself included. However, when I sit in the bus and put those earbuds in my ears, I slowly relax, finally, enjoying my day. Music is my companion, When I am home alone, music keeps me safe. I don’t think there is one day that goes by for me without a source of music going in my ears. There isn’t one type of music that I listen to. I listen to a variety of songs that inspire different parts of me and makes me be who I am. Music has incorporated itself into my life, making me who I am as a person.

Review of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 by Shweta Murali

Review of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2
The highly-anticipated movie The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 finally released on Friday, November 20, and unfortunately it was quite a disappointment to me. Being an avid fan of both the movies and books (Team Peeta all the way), the movie was not as engaging and intriguing as the previous three. I thought it would be the best because it is, sadly, the last movie of the series, but in my opinion it was not nearly as good as the others. The movie started off where Part 1 left off, with Katniss treating the injuries Peeta caused her. It continued to build on the love triangle between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale, as well as Katniss’s plot to kill President Snow. There is, however, one event towards the end of the movie that was upsetting, but also provided some sort of action, but you will have to wait to see it yourself (No spoilers here!). Movie makers, specifically those targeted towards young adults, have recently began splitting movie finales into two movies a lot more than they have in the past. This is to increase revenue, prolong the movie, and increase anticipation. I am usually a fan of this, as seen previously in Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hobbit, but to me it was not the best choice for The Hunger Games. Although the anticipation of waiting for part 2 made it better for me, I think that Mockingjay would have been better off as one movie. In addition, while I do love the couple of Katniss and Peeta, I believe that too much time was spent on the development of their relationship rather than the action taking place in Panem. However, despite its faults, I certainly do not regret going to see Mockingjay, Part 2. There has been no movie like it before and I do recommend that people see it, just do not bring your hopes up.

Predictions for the Yankees and Mets Offseason by Faiz Syed

Predictions for the Yankees and Mets Offseason
Faiz Syed
The Yankees and Mets both had successful 2015 seasons.  The Yankees could have played better towards the end of the season but they did make the playoffs for the first time since 2012.  The Mets had an incredible year, making it to the World Series game.  After watching many Yankees and Mets games this season, I have analyzed the team’s needs and I have come up with some effective ways that both teams can address their needs in order to be better teams in the next season.
The 2015 Yankees team was far from perfect but they did improve from the 2014 team that did not make the playoffs.  One thing that I observed was that second base is a huge issue for the Yankees.  The last time the Yankees had an all-star second baseman was in 2013 when they still had Robinson Cano.  With Robinson Cano, the Yankees were able to win the 2009 World Series.  For the past year, the Yankees had had Stephen Drew at second base.  In my opinion, Stephen Drew struggled mightily and was one of the Yankees wink links in the batting order.  His low .201 batting average reflects his poor play at the plate.  In previous off seasons, the Yankees had spent a large sum of money to fill in holes in their roster.  I don’t believe that this will change this year.  I believe that the Yankees are going to spend big money to secure a quality second baseman.  Daniel Murphy and Ben Zobrist are both free agents this year.  They both played in the World Series match.  I think that the Yankees will sign one of them to fill in the need at second base.  Another need that the Yankees have is a utility infielder who can pay as a designated hitter and be able to play first base.  The Yankees struggled to win games towards the end of the season, and this was after first baseman Mark Teixeira got injured.  Mark Teixeira has been injured in the past multiple times, and the Yankees should invest in a backup first baseman in case he gets injured for a long period of time again.     Along with Stephen Drew, Chris Young and Chris Capuano will enter free agency.

The Mets had the second best season out of all of the teams in baseball this year.  They played great in the post season and made it all the way to the World Series. However, the Mets can potentially lose two of their best players as Yoenis Cespedes and Daniel Murphy are entering free agency.  Usually players who are free agents after playing in the World Series matches expect teams to pay high money for their services.  I believe that if these players demand more money than the Mets are willing to pay, the Mets will likely turn elsewhere to find replacements. The Mets are going to spend their money wisely and not waste too much of it on one player. Luckily for the Mets, there are some free agents available who play the same positions as Daniel Murphy and Yoenis Cespedes. I think that the Mets will most likely pursue free agents Asdrubal Cabrera and Howie Kendrick as they will probably be looking for less money than Yoenis Cespedes and Daniel Murphy.  I think that the Mets should also look to trade away Michael Cuddyer and sign a younger and less expensive outfielder.  A team looking for a veteran outfielder would be willing to pay more money for him, and this could allow the Mets to spend more money on another player that they need.

Miss Telall Nov 6 edition

11/6/15
Hello loyal SBPL readers, it’s your favorite advice columnist- Miss Telall, with two more entries. If you’re having issues or just want to talk, she’s always up to offer advice, so be sure to email her at MissTelallSBPL@gmail.com, and check the SPBL blog for a reply addressing your problem. All entries are always ANONYMOUS, and no problem is too big or too embarrassing for Miss Telall to tackle!

Dear Miss Telall,

Gym class. The words strike fear in even the most well-adjusted of students. Unless you’re physically fit, this is 88 minutes of torture. I always spend the period trying to hide my pouring sweat, hoping I won’t miss the ball, and praying we won’t be forced outside in either the freezing cold, or the sweltering humidity. How do I learn to enjoy gym??

                                  Sincerely,
Pit Stains and Gym Pains
Dear Pit Stains and Gym Pains,

Ah, the eternal struggle- gym class is notoriously tough for the majority of students- so don’t ever feel self-conscious if you’re feeling uncomfortable! We’re all learning to deal with some of the same emotions. So, to address your points one by one:

The Sweat: Stains, as a fellow bucket-sweater, let me just tell you: at some point, it becomes tiring to be constantly worried about being judged for bodily functions you can’t control. Don’t let worry over what other people might think make you feel bad! Everyone sweats! Now, if the sweating and damp clothes starts making you feel uncomfortable, try investing in some moisture wicking clothing. Clothes designed to keep you dry, as well as darker shades and looser fits will keep you feeling cool and comfortable!

The Skills: Not everyone is talented at sports. Let me repeat- you are not alone. No one expects you to be a sports superstar! Focus on improving yourself for yourself and trying your hardest. Honestly, letting go of performance fears will make gym much more enjoyable. And, when you’re not constantly stressing, you will see some real progression in skill set!
The Weather: The weather isn’t something anyone can control- staff or otherwise. So just move around a bit more and bundle up in cold weather, and take it easier in cool clothing during hot weather. Always- this from a veteran gym-er- keep water, jackets, and shorts in your locker. Check the weather so you’re always prepared! And NEVER hesitate to tell a teacher if you feel sick.

Overall, just try to remember that everyone’s in the same boat! Don’t worry about how other people might judge you, and just focus on the best effort you can give to stay healthy- that’s the main goal of school gym. Have fun!

                                    Sincerely,
                                  Miss Telall
Dear Miss Telall,

All of my teachers, friends, and relatives are asking me continuously what careers I’m interested in, as I’m struggling to make an adequate decision. I’m not even sure what subjects I enjoy really. However, I’ve always had an interest in science- particularly physics- and have recently become very interested in psychology. Do you have any ideas about what career path I should choose, and where I can find out about different careers? By the way, I’m a senior in high school.
                                  Sincerely,
                                Career Confused
Dear Career Confused,

First off, don’t let all the questions about careers and interests result in a panicked state. Most people are just trying to ask you what you’re interested in. If you’re really struggling about making a final decision, consider the activities which you’re a part of and what classes you’ve taken. Make a choice to learn about the career through the courses you’ve taken, especially the fields which you are interested in. Additionally, you can reach out to people, like your guidance counselor, teachers, and parents. You can even seek out people in the fields that interest you. Ask questions to professionals within psychology and physics such as what they love about their work, what they don’t like so much, and about their life/career balance.
Explore the idea of what your life would be like within these different careers- really visualize it. Don’t be afraid to change your mind, as you are allowed to adjust your course, and start over at anytime. And while you’re at it, be sure to ask more than one person for advice. Be prepared to think critically about the advice they give you. Additionally, evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. What are you truly good at? Explore career opportunities within these fields.
And that’s a wrap! Miss Telall would love to hear from you some more, so be sure to ask us questions!
                                   Sincerely,
                                 Miss Telall

What’s The Use of Art? by Faiz Syed

What’s The Use of Art?
Art has been an essential key to the survival of humans ever since their beginnings in the Paleolithic age.  In the Paleolithic times, art allowed people to articulate skills, messages, and observances to other humans.  In modern times, art allows humans to visualize phenomena of the past, and to predict the changes of the future.  It captures the skills and technologies used in the present to ensure that these skills and technologies are not lost in the future.  The great value of art can be seen by the great precautionary measures that the French government took when the oldest art in the world was discovered in the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc cave.  These early paintings in the cave were drawn during the Paleolithic time and they now serve to help historians and archaeologists analyze and greater understand the way of life during that time period.  The use of art to articulate ideas helped generations build on ideas of the past, and the use of art to visualize the past, document the present, and predict the future makes it valuable to societies of any age.
Paleolithic paintings such as those discovered in the cave at Chauvet, are important in many ways.  During the Paleolithic age, such paintings allowed people to improve the technologies of the past.  Paintings allowed Paleolithic people to document their skills and technologies in an easy way for new generations to acquire knowledge of the same technologies and skills.  New generations would acquire this skill through mirror neurons.  Mirror neurons in the brain allow humans to mimic actions that they see.  When new generations of Paleolithic people saw paintings of the technologies of the past, the mirror neurons in their brains allowed them to retain the skills of their ancestors by mimicking them. This allowed technologies to be passed on for generations.  An example of this can be seen in the painting of multiple people hunting animals with bows and arrows at the Lascaux cave.  This painting of the bows and arrows would ensure that the skill and use of the bow and arrow is passed on to the next generation.
Paleolithic paintings are also important to historians who use them as one of the only ways to picture the life and traditions of the Paleolithic people.  There is little archaeological evidence that exists of this time period, and this results in heavier emphasis on Paleolithic art to give historians more knowledge of the time period.  For example, many of the paintings at Chauvet depicted animals.  One of these examples is a painting of a bison.  Historians use this painting to guess that bison were important to the Paleolithic people, and because they were hunters, there is a chance that bison was one of the animals that they hunted for food.  These Paleolithic paintings provide great examples to modern day historians about Paleolithic life.  The French government recognizes the importance of the cave art, and that is why they closed off the Chauvet cave to the public. They also took precautionary measures to preserve the art in the cave, even when the movie, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, was being filmed about the art in the cave.
Werner Herzog, the director of Cave of Forgotten Dreams, ascribes great value to art, and especially to Paleolithic art.  He views art as amusement, and as a means to view the lives of people from the past.  In his director’s statement, he says that when he was twelve years old, he bought a book about the caves of Lascaux so that he could see the lives of people before the “domestication of animals and before the invention of agriculture.”  Werner Herzog’s view of art is one of art’s many values: its ability to show people the lives of people from the past.  It creates images in people’s minds about distinctions of the world of the past and that of the present.  However, art can also be used to predict the world of the future.  There are paintings that depict the painter’s ideas of the world of the future.  These two reasons, of viewing the past and the future through art, is a main reason why many people go to visit art museums.  Many people want to be able to see the lives of the people from the past, and to see how the future will change.

Art played an important role in the development of human societies and technologies ever since the Paleolithic period.  It allowed humans to visualize technologies and skills of the past, and allowed them to think of ways to improve upon technologies of the past.  Art has helped the human race develop new skills and has helped them become more technologically advanced over time.  Art is a very important part of the human race and always has been.  Although many artists are not well compensated for the art that they create, they do it because it is necessary for humans to improve and because many people with artistic talents enjoy creating art.  Because of the ability of art to help improve the skills and abilities of the human race, it is one of the most important parts of the human culture.

Book Review: The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau Joshua Liao

Book Review: The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau
Joshua Liao

The Testing, by Joelle Charbonneau was a recent read that I came across while searching through a library’s banned book collection. A couple chapters into the book, I could not figure out how in any way it had been banned. Then in a shocking turn of events, I found out exactly why. The main character of the book is Malencia Vale (Cia), a bright young student from Five Lakes Colony in the United States, years into the future. Due to her high test scores in school, she was chosen to participate in the Testing, a complex assessment composed of four parts. Those who passed would earn themselves a spot in the prestigious University. Cia cautiously approaches the testing, along with three other kids that have been chosen along with her from Five Lakes. Her first test, we find out, is not something that the test makers throw at her, but from her assigned roommate.  Cia passes the test and survives, while her roommate ends up hanging herself. The first part of the Testing assesses Cia’s knowledge of math, history, and science- basic standard assessments. The second part turns dangerous, as the examinees are forced to distinguish between a pile of poisonous and non-poisonous plants. The catch is that they have to eat the ones that they deem non-poisonous. In the third round of the testing, Cia is put in a group filled with liars and cheaters and told to work together with them. In a stunning display of brilliance that is worthy of your time to understand, she outsmarts her competitors and moves on to the last part of the test. There, she is united with Thomas, a boy who came from Five Lakes and one that Cia also happens to have a crush on. Together, the two teenagers make the long journey to the finish line. The entire story was vivid and engaging, if a little grotesque at some points. It combines a Hunger Games-like atmosphere with a more science-based explanation. There are secrets at every turn that make you want to continue to keep on reading. It is clearly written, and the plot is not too confusing so the book flows nicely. The suspense and surprise is constant - there are almost no dull moments in the book. If there is ever a time where you need a page turner to pass the time, this is the way to go.

Dear Miss Telall,

I cannot tell you how uber stressed I am. Junior year means assignment after assignment after test after project and on and on. I have absolutely NO time to study for SATs, PSATS, or do any extracurricular work! I have to spend entire days stuck in my room doing one subject, ignoring the rest! How am I supposed to maintain good grades, but also do things I have talent in, like colleges want?

                                       Sincerely,
                               Are You Kidding Me?
Dear Are You Kidding Me?,

Don’t panic! Sometimes, worrying overmuch can make it harder to face one’s work. You can make it through these tough times with a little determination, and some strategic planning. In terms of dealing with your present situation, just take each assignment one at a time. Things can get overwhelming when you don’t break them down- if you steadily work through things, the load will be much easier to handle. Your teachers wouldn’t give you these assignments if you didn’t have the ability to handle them well! So don’t rely on 12 hour, “handle-alls”. Instead, create a broken down schedule- each day, you might assign a few hours to English, the next hour to Math, etc. This way, you won’t become bogged down by one subject, and can instead systematically move through all of them. Furthermore, the brain works best when it is given time to process certain thoughts and new information.
On that note, if you assign just 30-60 minutes a day for SATs, PSATS, or extracurriculars, you will be surprised at how much you can accomplish, versus a full day of cramming! Take a few moments to sort out your priorities- which classes are most important to you, and what are your goals for them?
Next year, remember to lighten the load if you really feel too overworked! It will be easier to maintain good grades when you don’t overstretch yourself- take classes you’ll enjoy, and that leave some time for the other things in your life that you love! Colleges appreciate someone who is well-rounded, and that doesn’t necessarily mean taking the best of everything! It means having the responsibility to understand how to handle what you are taking! High-level classes aren’t the end-all-be-all. They’re great, challenging courses, but you shouldn’t sacrifice other parts of your life, or your health, for them!
Finally, try consulting a family member for advice- your peers have been through this as well, so ask them about their experiences!

                                       Sincerely,
                                     Miss Telall
Dear Miss Telall,

I have a sweet sixteen coming up, and I really want to go to it. However, my parents insist upon me staying at home. They pretty much refuse to let me do anything, even hanging out with my friends or going bowling, which happens to be one of my favorite activities. I understand it’s junior year, and I have a massive amount of responsibilities, but I feel it’s okay to relax once in a while. How do I get my parents to chill out?

                                   Sincerely,
                              Controlling Parents
Dear Controlling Parents,

In order to convince your parents into letting you do what you want, you have to make sure that all of your responsibilities are fulfilled and you show them the best behavior possible. Additionally, you can also help out around the house to show that you’re willing to give up your free time just to help them. Once they notice that you are putting in extra effort, I can assure you that they will loosen up and let you do the things you want.
You should take some time and talk to your parents to give you the free time that you want. You can talk about how you’ve been balancing your time properly and keeping up with your responsibilities. Due to this, you deserve free time which you can spend with your friends and do the things you want.
In order to get the free time that you want, you have to ensure that you have your parents’ trust. Be nice to them, and appreciate the efforts they take for you! It’s not every day that parents get thanked for the things they are doing on a daily basis. This will lighten up their mood, and help you to get your point of having some well deserved free time across.
And that’s a wrap! Miss Telall is glad to be back on our weekly schedule. Be sure to send us some more questions- remember, all responses are left anonymous!

Ways to Stay Fit and Healthy in the Winter Samhitha Balaji

Ways to Stay Fit and Healthy in the Winter
Samhitha Balaji

As the winter approaches, many of us begin to stop going out for morning runs and start staying in to watch the holiday specials. Even though staying indoors and eating is a great way to spend the holidays, it is good to keep up your exercise habits. During the summer, we have a balance between exercise and eating but as winter comes around, our eating tends to overtake our exercise. In the winter, your body adjusts to store more fat in order to keep warm. In order to balance your body, we can use these tips to stay healthy while still enjoying the fun of the holidays:
  • Doing simple exercises daily can simply lower the amount of fat your body stores for the winter.
  • Opt for more comfortable well fitted clothing, rather then sweatshirts, to see the difference in your body as you exercise. Also baggy clothing leads to laziness and plenty of time to be a couch potato
  • Your carb craving increases in winter for more fat for your body to store. For breakfast and lunch, eat some healthy carb options like oatmeal, vegetables, protein, and dairy. Between lunch and dinner, go for low-carb foods, like crackers, popcorn, even cereal, as a snack. For dinner, go for pasta, or potatoes something with lower carbs but a good amount of protein.
  • Winter outfit: Inner Layer: a long sleeve or thin sweater; Middle Layer: a sweater or sweatshirt of some sort; Outer Layer: raincoat or heavy jacket ~ these will keep the heat trapped and, depending on the temperature, you can peel off or add on layers
  • Too comfortable? Stay inside with the heat, but don’t even sit on the couch until you’ve completed the workout-- Sit ups, push ups, crunches, squats: simple exercises to keep yourself busy -- You can even do these while a commercial is going on during your show
  • Too dark means too tired to get up... Sleep an hour early; this will allow you to get your long sleep but still have an AM workout routine
  • Too wet? After a run remove the shoelaces and liners to make them dry quickly, but don’t keep them too close to a radiator (it will destroy the base of the shoe); you can also buy waterproof spray to prevent less damage to your shoes while running

All of these little things factor into staying fit for the holidays. Along with enjoying the winter delicacies, these tips will keep your winter healthy and strong. When springs around, you won’t have to start losing weight but, you will already be ready to go out! Just remember: Spring and summer aren’t that far away and so, staying healthy in the winter is a year-round good thing. :)

My Happy Place By Chandu Singathi

My Happy Place
By Chandu Singathi

As my bare thighs come in contact with the rough wooden bench and my skinny fingers feel the bumps in the old tan-colored paint, feelings of familiarity and freedom stir inside me. After what feels like an endless week of hard work, experiencing the closeness of the nature surrounding me brings back my sense of comfort and belonging and makes me feel at home. The subtle winds bring chills up my spine and shift the position of my hair, tickling my bare neck ever so slightly. As I observe the departure of the sun for the day, the sky slowly breaks out into hundreds of shades of red. Peering between the cracks of the tall oak tree’s array of leaves, I catch glimpses of the giant descending ball of fire as it goes on its daily retreat. Stunned, I shift my gaze from the sky to the variety of multicolored leaves slowly dying on the oak tree, and I lay my eyes on exuberant reds, oranges, and yellows becoming illuminated under the setting sun’s rays. Whenever feelings of stress take over my mind, I retreat to my deck, taking in the peacefulness of the atmosphere and temporarily freeing myself from worries and problems. While I bathe in the beauty of the nature in my backyard, my thoughts begin to flow more freely and I speculate on various issues, or I sit with a still mind and simply observe the slightly overgrown grass covered in fallen leaves as well as the aged oak trees scattered around the area. During most Friday evenings, the addicting aroma of my mother’s famous chicken rice makes its way to my position on the largest deck in the community, and I remember the familiarity of eating that same dish almost every Friday for the past ten years. The burning sensation of the onions’ scent mixed in with the fresh smell of coriander stimulates my thoughts and memories, but I do not become shaken by these feelings. Instead, I remain on the wooden bench and peek at the back doors and windows of my neighbors’ houses, suddenly obtaining the sensation of being watched. Seeing no one and feeling completely separated from the world, I take a few deep breaths and inhale the fresh scent of the marigold flowers sprouting in the garden a few feet away from the deck, and I almost taste the revitalizing flavor of the mint leaves growing beside them. The natural green pigment of the mint leaves brings me to my senses, invigorating me from within and releasing any last knots of tension inside me. Before I know it, the crickets’ consistent chirps and the fireflies’ sudden bursts of light signal the coming of night, and I realize that dinnertime arrives. While I make myself taller and approach the back door, I hear the hooting of an owl from a distance, and my attempts to glimpse the owls results in my sight of nothing but tall, dark oaks with a few crumpled leaves remaining on them. As I make my way back inside my house, the cold wood under my bare feet sends chills up my legs, pushing me to increase my speed. While my nearly-frozen fingers embrace the door handle, I hear the familiar voices of my favorite Indian television actors and actresses along with the noise of my family members in the kitchen, and I scurry into my house before all the food is gone.

Refugee Crisis by Annamika Dua

I read a real story a while back named “Our Terrifying Swim: Two Syrians' Journey Through Dark Waters to Greece” by Salma Abdelaziz. It was written on September 14, 2015. This article was about two Syrian refugees who wanted to escape their current lives and go to safer and better places. The two men were Hesham Modamani, age 24, and his friend Feras Abukhalil, age 37. Both Modamani and Abukhalil knew that they did not have enough money for a smuggler ferry ticket, so they decided that the best possible option to get out of Syria was to swim. They swam from the Turkish coast to a Greek island called Chios. Both men planned the trip using their phones and Google Maps. Although it may seem like a suicide mission, this is how far people were willing to go to get out of the war zones. Madamani and Abukhalil had many difficulties throughout their journey. For example, they were not able to rest at the places they intended to because both islands ended up being rocky and unsuitable for them to take a break. To get through the amount of exhaustion they were feeling, they tried to cheer each other up by keeping the air light and telling jokes. After swimming for a tiresome five hours, they were able to see their destination of Chios and Modamani was able to get the attention of a ship using a laser pen. After getting to Greece, both men said their goodbyes and parted their ways. However, both men knew that they wanted to do something to help the Syrians who were still suffering and being oppressed. Personally, I think this is a very inspiring story. We should look at and commend these amazing heroes for being so head-strong. I think that these two men have a great story to tell and should not be ignored.

A Syrian Crisis

You might have seen images on the news or on the cover of time magazine, depicting Middle Eastern looking people with exhausted or sad expressions on their faces. However, most of us move on without taking a moment to consider what the images are about. After all, those people are not in America and there’s very little that we can do to help them. That much is true. But it is still important to understand this issue that is currently one of the world’s largest and hottest topics: the European Immigration crisis. To begin, Syria has been engulfed in a civil war that has gone on for almost four years now, with pro-democracy rebels fighting against the al-Assad regime. As the country has been torn apart by war, many Syrians have left, fleeing due to the destruction and persecution. The destruction, of course, has come from the war. The religious persecution comes from a group that you’re sure to have heard of: the Islamic State in Syria otherwise known as ISIS. The immigrants begin a journey that will last thousands of miles into Europe, where they hope to regroup and start a new life. Now just take a moment to put yourself in the immigrants shoes. You’re living a normal, routine life one day, when all of a sudden you receive news that a peaceful democracy protest has turned violent and war breaks out across your neighborhood. After a couple years of surviving bombs and fires, the situation has become too dangerous and you now have to pack up and leave the place where you grew up. You don’t even know where you are going, just that it will take a long time to get there. That is the situation that millions of Syrians are facing as they leave their country. They flee to European nations that are already overwhelmed with millions of other migrants. There are camps set up for the migrants to stay in, but they are overcrowded and dangerously short on supplies and medical aid. People are dying everyday, yet the efforts to help them are barely noticed due to the massive amounts of people that need attention. It is hard to imagine that so many people in the world are suffering so much, yet others know so little about their predicament. With this background, the next time you see a news article or a CNN report covering the crisis, take a moment to listen, to see what new developments are going on. There might just be some way that you can help.

Letter to a bully from Sanjana Pendharkar

In seventh grade, I was lucky enough to stumble upon the fantastic novel, “Dear Bully: Seventy Authors Tell Their Stories”. Evidently, it recalls the experiences seventy authors have had with bullying. Reading their stories, I was inspired to share my own experience with bullying. This story takes place way back when I was in elementary school.
(*All names have been changed)

Dear Lily*,

I’ll never forget you. I’ve met a lot of people. The close friends, chatterboxes, super-doers- but I’ve never met anyone like you. You’ve left a bruise in my heart, and even today, the bruise stays. You showed me how subtle bullying can be. You victimized me in a way I didn’t even think about. I guess it has to do with the day we met.

Except, I can’t even say why.

I had just moved to a new school that year. I opened the door to my classroom and felt a wave of nervousness come over me. I peered in and saw you. I remember it like it was yesterday. Big brown eyes. Silky, straight black hair flowing below your shoulders and a pleasant smile on your face. Glossy lips, no flaws, and that North Face Jacket. No wonder I wanted to be your friend.

We did become friends after a few weeks. At first, you confided in me. You’d tell me some not-so-nice things about my other friends and force me to shun them. So slowly, bit-by-bit, you started gaining my trust. Once you thought you had it all, you started growing. You grew in our friendship- you took the charge, you took control. On the other hand, I started shrinking. I lost myself inside our dangerous friendship. I listened to you. I followed you. I did whatever you wanted. I trusted you.

That’s when you pulled out your malevolent weapon. You made rules. Well, no they weren’t rules really, I’d hastily reassure myself. You just didn’t like it, that’s all. You didn’t like it if I didn’t do whatever you asked. You would persuade me to do all of your favorite things. I mean, if I picked, how good would things be? You’d always have the better option. If you wanted to spend time with me, how great was that? So what if I did all of your homework? Who cares if we hung out with your friends? You’d already assured me all of my friends were losers.

After a month-or-so, you revealed your true colors. You turned into a living nightmare. Being your follower, I saw you in your disguise as a nice, kind person. By then, you had started lashing out at me. You started to ridicule me. But then, you’d apologize and blame yourself- swear you were just having a mood swing and say why, why, why were you so mean, so inconsiderate- until I would feel sorry for you and assure you that no, you weren’t a bad person. You weren’t mean or inconsiderate- it was all my fault. I’m the one who should have been saying sorry. Then, you’d cry and hug me and say, “You’re the best friend I’ve ever had.” You’d promise me you would never be mean to be again. For a few days, you would spend time with me, be all fun and games until you went back to being mean again.

The last thing I remember about being your friend is you screaming at me for asking if you wanted to play during recess. I walked away from you, my heart shattered and tears falling down my face. That’s when I realized how fatal our friendship had been. It had eaten away at my conscience until I couldn’t even think straight. From then on, I vowed: no more bad friends. You’ve had enough, Sanjana. Don’t blind yourself just to appear stronger. See the red flags and get out. Pronto.

At first, I thought being without you meant being lonely and an outcast. But as I shut the door on greedy, manipulative friends, I found real friends. The true-blue ones that hang with you until the very end.

There’s still something I want to say to you Lily*.

Thank you.

Thank you for teaching me to not always trust first impressions. From your friendly disguises, I’ve learned it takes more than a first look to become someone’s real friend. You’ve shown me it’s what’s inside that truly counts.

Thank you for making me think before I start a friendship. To look down the road for red flags and danger signs. You’ve made me pay close attention to the smallest details. No longer will I blindly trust a person. No longer will I blindly let a friend hurt me with their stinging words. No longer will I hide in the darkness.

Thank you for showing me how to deal with anxiety. Every time I do something important, I remember your mocking face. If I’m scared to do something, I’ll remember you Lily.

You’ve left a scar in me which I will always remember. You’ve showed me how subtle bullying can be. You’ve victimized me in a way I still can’t imagine. You’ve left a bruise in my heart. I’ll never be the same.

No longer your victim,

Sanjana
