Why Third Spaces Matter By: Mridula Murugan

 Why Third Spaces Matter

By: Mridula Murugan

Third places, or third spaces, are important places for the community to come together, allowing people to find connection and stay social. They are a great setting for informal places for children to stay engaged with others, such as community parks, gyms, and any place that makes people appreciate life and certain interests together! These spaces can be regular settings where people feel like they belong, no matter where they come from. In addition to what is directly taught in the classroom, these environments could teach them something new, including other interpersonal skills with different kinds of people.

There has been research showing that third spaces have many academic benefits and can help build stronger social interactions among children. It can make you more confident in interacting with others and trying new things, especially using that experience engaging with these third spaces. Other than that, there are tangible improvements in standardized test scores, GPAs, and completing homework for classes regularly. Students also have more intrinsic motivation to complete their work and do complex problems, motivating them towards success in the long-term.

Overall, third spaces can help build communication, motivation to succeed academically, and soft skills that are required in the real world! Public libraries, just like South Brunswick Public Library, are a great place to borrow books. Beyond that, however, I believe that it’s a great place to study, meet with friends and other students over projects, attend fun events, and try out new interests. It doesn’t have the burden of paying to stay involved, but it creates an environment where you can still stay connected with your community. So, find your third space today!
