Personal Identity Through Fashion, an article by Krisha Shah

Personal Identity Through Fashion

by Krisha Shah

Clothing is extremely important in my life. The way I dress conveys my identity. It shows my emotions, interests, and personality. When I wear brighter colors, such as pink, sky blue, and yellow, I feel more energized and confident. In contrast, when I wear comfortable clothes such as sweatpants and sweatshirts, I feel tired or bored. The way I dress connects to aspects of myself, which is why I believe clothing is so important. In fact, studies have proven that clothing forms first impressions (Hester and Hehman). In other words, people form first impressions through clothing rather than communication. In my life, clothes are a way of finding people that have the same energy and interests as myself. At social gatherings, it is not feasible to talk to every single person, which is why I approach people that I believe I can have a conversation with based on their clothing. I look to see if their clothing is similar to mine, the colors that it has, and the way they styled it to name a few before I approach them. This has allowed me to easily find people that I can communicate with and form friendships with. Overall, I believe that fashion is extremely important and that everyone should use their clothes to showcase aspects of themselves.
