Whisper to Me by Nick Lake
Whisper to Me is the character study of Cassandra, a 17 year old girl who suddenly starts to hear a voice speaking to her. But this voice isn’t a friendly one, no in fact it’s quite the opposite. One of the many traits that makes this novel stands out is that unlike many young adult novels, Whisper to Me is written as an epistolary novel, meaning the story is told purely through letters (or in this case, one giant email). Cass struggles as she has to navigate her life with a deceased mother, distant father, new neighbors, and of course, the disembodied voice that berates and threatens her on the daily. Oh, and did I forget to mention that there’s a serial killer in town? I personally enjoyed this book quite a bit, and I especially liked that the author, Nick Lake, wasn’t one to shy away from incorporating dark themes, which made the book feel all that more real to me. The way this was written made me feel truly attached to the main character, and though I haven’t gone through half the trauma Cassandra has, I still felt like I could relate to her. This novel is simply a stunning masterpiece with a vast wealth of insight into mental health struggles.
