Breaking Bad Review
by: Vennela Japa
Breaking Bad, while now a show that has been drifted into oblivion as a cult classic, deserves to
be seen by even more people. Recently, one of my friends got me into this show, and I am so
glad that they did. The interesting concept that at first has one wondering, “where are they going
to take this and how are they going to stretch this into 5 seasons?” shocks you with its
entrancing writing and engaging pace. There is never a boring moment, (apart from that one
episode that seems to have nothing to do with the plot, but instead carries a deeper meaning
related to a character and his struggles,), as all episodes seem to contain no filler, only action
that drives the plot forward. None of the characters are “heroes” per say, with all of them having
faults of their own that they either try to absolve or delve deeper into until they are
unrecognizable from the beginning. There is a reason why this is one of the most highly
regarded shows in well, history I would say. After finishing this series, I was recommended to
watch its critically acclaimed prequel, Better Call Saul. While BCS didn’t capture my interest
immediately, it proved itself to be on the same par as its successful predecessor. Vince Gilligan
uses his incredible writing skills to create 2 of the best shows I have ever seen. I am excited for
what he comes up with next. It seems I haven’t even explained the main plot. Walter White, a
financially unstable high school chemistry teacher realizes he has a life threatening disease and
has no money to pay for it and no money to leave his family behind. He decides to use his
knowledge to start a business selling methamphetamine, along with a former student who failed
his class. The story goes ways you would never expect, and by the end you’re shocked at how it
took 5 seasons to go through all of that. I hope this makes you want to watch this pinnacle of a
show.
