The Mind
By Difan Li
a warning sign
shines brightly nigh
up on the entrance door
it’s scattered light
sends rays of warmth
across the cracked stone floor
and the knocker hangs
its dreary head
as it ponders deep in thought
what new visitor
and from whence he comes
to the lonesome place he’s sought?
he steels his nerves
but shows no fear
for what should there be to find
an empty cavern
or the great song hall
all once crossed his mind
so he pushes upon
that small wood frame
rough from grains of time
and stares in wonder
at what he finds
the horror, beauty sublime
he wanders through the barren fields
through wildflowers that dot the land
he swims through oceans of crimson red
at the songbirds’ last command
and I know without a shred of doubt
he’s lost forevermore
upon entrance there’s no escape
no path nor exit door
and just outside
the warning sign
shines for travelers across all time
a warning sign that bears four words:
welcome to my mind.
