My Opinion on the Protests in China, by Mohnish Ramatchandiran

My Opinion on the Protests in China

by: Mohnish Ramatchandiran

Hi, my name is Mohnish Ramatchandiran and today I am going to be talking about the recent protests in China and what China is doing in response to the protests. China's zero-Covid policy has made people very angry and on 11/27 people in China finally acted when they protested. This was very out of the norm because the last time there was a public protest in China was in 1976. The reason people were more mad than usual was because the government policy had changed earlier in the month raising hopes of easing down on the covid laws; however due to an infectious surge, the government had released more covid controls. The negative effects of the zero-Covid policy over the past 3 years is that it has dragged down the economy of China drastically and also dropped youth employment by nearly 20%. In response to these protests, many apartment communities have successfully convinced local owners to not enforce the lockdowns because there is no legal basis for it. Another reason why people started to protest is because of a building fire that killed 10 people in an area that had been locked down for months. Many people were mad that Covid controls prevented residents and rescue workers from saving lives.  My opinion on this whole matter is very mixed. I understand why the government wants to have strict Covid laws in order to keep citizens and the country safe from covid. However, I also think they are being more strict than other places to save face because they are the one who originally started/ spread Covid 19. The Chinese government also has realized that they are causing more harm than good with some of these laws so I think that places that have a lot of cases should be under heavier authority than places that don't have as many. Thank you for reading this and listening to my opinion
