Hickory Dickory Death, written by Agatha Christie, is a mystery novel in the Hercule Poirot detective series. It follows a series of small acts of thievery in a student hostel, a seemingly insignificant case easily solved by the great detective. This appears to be the end of the mystery until the thief becomes the victim in the next crime, murder. This then leads to a sudden spiral of events, revealing a web of mystery that may even pose a challenge to our esteemed sleuth, Poirot.

Agatha Christie once again surprised me with her writing, managing to pull everything together in the final pages in what seems like the unlikeliest of events. I found this book to be highly entertaining and one of Christie’s easier novels that can be enjoyed by young and older readers alike. The relationships between characters are realistic in their complexities but designed to be intriguing and fascinating to wrap your head around. Each character has distinct traits and personalities that seem to make them both possible and inconspicuous as suspects to the crime.

I really enjoyed the way Christie presents each of her novels in different settings and situations, creating a unique crime scene and motive for each of her stories. Hickory Dickory Death introduces a very new perspective in a student hostel, presenting various young and foreign characters with eccentric personas. Overall, this novel is yet another example of Agatha Christie’s talents in crime-writing, and I highly recommend giving it a chance if you ever find yourself up to a good, old-fashioned murder mystery.
