Book Review - The Gifted School by Bruce Holsinger
By: Emma Liu
The book, The Gifted School by Bruce Holsinger explored how far some families will go for their children to be labeled as gifted, and accepted into a prestigious magnet. The characters in the story were each set with authentic flaws and strengths, and the plot was thoroughly developed. It also followed the stories of four families and was written from multiple perspectives, which I enjoyed. The book was able to take apart the idea of “gifted” and delve into the competitiveness and anxieties strung from within.
One of my favorite quotes from the book was, “You’ll be a lot less obsessed with what people think of you when you understand how infrequently they do” (Holsinger, 165), which shed light on the importance of being present and self-aware.
In all, the book touched on real-world ideas and is an interesting read.
