Between Shades of Gray Character Analysis by Emma Liu

Between Shades of Gray

by Emma Liu

The main character of the book “Between Shades of Gray” by Ruta Sepetys is Lina Vilkas, and she is described as a headstrong fifteen year old girl with a passion for art. In the text, it states, “I [Lina] drew the dragon and my heart began to beat faster. He was alive. I felt a wave of heat from his fiery breath” (Sepetys 38). Lina’s enthusiasm for drawing is apparent in her artwork, which seems to come alive for her. Though Lina is initially portrayed as naive and weak, she later risks her life multiple times throughout the novel in order to protect her family and friends. In the text, it states, “I [Lina] quickly began snatching the potatoes with my free had… stuffing them into my pockets” (Sepetys 221), which shows Lina’s growth, as she is willing to risk her own safety for others.
