What Patriotism means to Me by Emma Liu

 What Patriotism means to Me

Patriotism is one’s love towards their country.

However, the past years have been life-changing for all of us.

To me, no longer does patriotism stand for one’s love for their country,

But a movement to fix the flaws strung around their nation.

Many may have heard the quote, “Love is blind.”

But love is not, and will not be blind.

If you do not love a country, you will not have the urge to fix it.

Love does not mean avoiding the flaws,

Rather, finding the flaws and fixing them.

Without love, a mother should have no duty in correcting her child,

Nor should your coach take care in fixing your technique.

On the other hand, patriotism does not mean giving blind love,

As that kind of love, purely describes no love in the first place.

Life’s everyday moments display the simplest forms of affection,

And on a larger scale, patriotism is what shows a broader shape of love.

Voters and protesters both take part as a patriot,

Showing their love by contributing to the nation’s future.

One’s voice, and ability to speak up,

One’s platform used to share thoughts,

And one’s desire to change,

For me, all show patriotism.

Patriots also help others live better lives,

Whether that is through the military,

Or through voting and protesting as a part of our country.

Patriots encourage others and bring awareness to something.

With patriotism, you need to have the willingness to change,

As nothing is perfect.

Patriotism helps merge people together, for a shared cause and love.

To spread your ideas and thoughts is a way of showing the world what is more to come.

To use your voice is to take part in the future.

The world lies in our hands, so make the most of your impact on it.
