We are Not from Here
Book Review by Emma Liu
The book, We are Not from Here, by Jenny Torres Sanchez is about three characters, Pulga, Chico, and Pequena living in a town called Puerto Barrios in Guatemala. However, due to a course of events that put all three of them in harmful situations, they leave their homeland and make the dangerous journey to the United States by following the route of La Bestia, a train system that takes them to the US-Mexico Southern Border and gives them the possibility of a better life. Throughout the journey, Pulga, Chico, and Pequena face hardship and loss, yet still, persevere with the hope of safety and a new life.
Personally, I really enjoyed this book because it was told from the alternating perspectives of Pulga and Pequena, which gave me more insight into the characters. I also really liked the overall plot of the book because it was well developed.
A connection I had with this book was that, along the journey, the characters all used hope as a source of determination and inspiration which is something I also believe in doing.
All in all, I would strongly recommend this book because it touches on real-world issues that are often put aside in YA books.
