I Am Malala Book Review by Difan Li

I Am Malala Book Review by Difan Li

I Am Malala is a memoir by Malala Yousafzai describing how she stood up and fought for girls’ education, eventually becoming recognized as the symbol of peaceful protest and human rights around the world. She describes her childhood and the history of the place where she grew up, capturing both its beauty and its traditions. The limits and restrictions placed on women were many, but her parents continued to support her and her education. Malala describes the valuable lessons she learned from childhood as well, including the danger of lying and stealing and the ability to accept losing sometimes. Troubles began with the Taliban’s invasion and attacks. Malala spoke out with BBC Urdu and a documentary with the New York Times. She eventually received recognition for various other awards and criticized the actions of the Taliban, making herself a target. One day, on the bus, Malala was shot by the Taliban, shocking the world and creating controversy over the actions of both parties. After her recovery, Malala continued to focus on her work, stating that she wished to be remembered as someone who fought for education and not as the person who was shot. This book is simple enough for younger readers and can help them gain a broad understanding about some of the challenges still present in society. Inspiring and engaging, I would recommend this novel for anyone hoping to find a book that may truly change or shape the way you see the world.
