A powerful and inspirational take on two teen boys, Rashad and Quinn. One black, one white, and both American. Collectively, they face the unspeakable truth that racism and prejudice did not die following the fight for civil rights. Rashad, a 17 year old high school junior, went to the store. A lady tripped him over and unfortunately, made him drop a bag of chips. What seems like a simple accident took on a series of events. The moment that changed his life and mindset forever. He was mistaken as a thief. The police officer pummeled him to the pavement and pounded him repeatedly. Rashad recovered in the hospital with several injuries including a broken nose and ribs. Quinn, a classmate of Rashad's, had viewed it all. He attempts to erase the incident in the store from his mind. However, as the news begins to unravel around school, he realizes the impact of police brutality. Rashad and Quinn both risk everything to save the community. Together, they make sure that the sidewalk graffiti of, “Rashad is absent again today,” happens to no one else in the future. I truly believe that this novel wholeheartedly captivates the entity of real world conflict. It was an eye-opener towards police brutality and I could connect it to the current movements bringing awareness to the issue just this past year.
