In the Country We Love: My Family Divided by Diane Guerrero is a memoir that speaks upon Diane’s childhood struggles about her family’s deportation that she had to face to become a successful actress. Her mother, father, and brother get deported back to Columbia by ICE without anyone notifying her before coming home to an empty house. She was all alone at 14 years old and relied on the kindness of her neighbors to help her study and go to college. After graduating from college, she moves to NYC and joins an acting course: eventually, she’s part of the Netflix show Orange is the new Black which she’s thrilled about because it’s her first acting experience. I liked this book because it brought to light the fears that haunt the daily lives of immigrant families, and on a system that fails these immigrants over and over. I would recommend this book to teens who like government issues because this memoir is all about immigration and how it affects our society. I would rate this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars because it told an interesting story that many don’t hear in mainstream media.
