Hybrid Animals are a cross between two breeds or species to create a new species. However, animals are not supposed to reproduce outside of their species and face some barriers. A major barrier is sterility; the inability to create further offspring. Nonetheless, animals are still bred to make hybrids successfully and create some interesting animals.
Mules are the most common hybrid. Around the world, there are about 160,000. They are the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse. The reason they are bred is that they are larger than donkeys but physically built to live and travel through tough terrains. They also can lift more weight. Furthermore, they live longer than horses. With these traits, they have advantages over their parent species. They are used as means of transport with luggage.
Ligers are the cross of a male lion and a female tiger. Unlike the mule, they are not as useful or common. There are about 100 Ligers in the world. They can grow to 10 feet in length and 700 pounds, making them the largest cat in the world.
Zebroids are the offspring of a horse and donkey. Similar to the mule, they inherit the positive traits from their parent species. Zebras are less susceptible to diseases, while Horses are easier to train. Zebroids get both of these traits and find the right balance.
Grolar Bears are one hybrid animal species that are known to naturally be created. They are the offspring of Polar Bears and Grizzly bears. Their natural occurrence is partly due to the fact they live in similar locations. Climate Change has pushed Polar Bears into locations that contain Grizzly Bears. The first sighting happened in Canada in 2006.
Beefalos are the fertile offspring of domesticated cattle and bison. They were bred in the early 1970s in California. They are one of the rare cases where the lineage can continue to create offspring. They can reproduce for the first 25 years of their lives, while domesticated cows can only do so for the first ten years.
Camas are the hybrid of a Camel and Llama. They do not have lumps like camels but have the soft fur of Llamas. They were bred to create a large and strong animal that can survive the desert, such as a camel, and still have fluffy wool, from the Llama.
Zubrons are the hybrid of European Bison and domestic American cattle. Interestingly, it was named based on people in Poland sending a request. The hybrid was created in 1847 but may have existed earlier. Multiple scientists believed they would be a replacement for standard cattle because they were healthier and more durable. However, they were not viable replacements, and now a small population lives in Poland.
