Book Review of Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly
I would recommend this book for everyone who has a strong attachment to fairy tales, the book, Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly. This book is about Isabelle, one of the stepsisters of Cinderella, who is longing to win over the handsome prince and meet her mother’s expectations for her. However, the glass slipper doesn’t fit her, and she ends up cutting off her toes so that it fits, but the Prince turns her down once he sees the deception that she has done. Isabelle has been trying to be the sweet stepsister and the perfect girl like her mother expects her to be since her childhood, and unfortunately, her decision made others view her as a mean, inconsiderate, and jealous person. The old Fate decides that there is no possibility for Isabel to change her destiny with all that bitterness in her, while Chance, the marquis, believes that there is still hope for Isabelle. It’s up to Isabelle to break the glass of stereotypes, and run towards her path for redemption and a new form of beauty. I would personally recommend this book because it put me through the shoes of the person who everyone believes is at fault, and it made me see that people who’ve made mistakes also deserve a chance for redemption. Not many people see the villain as an ordinary person who became a villain because of something that happened to them. To be honest, in most fairy tales, the villain’s side of the story isn’t heard, and a chance for redemption has never been given to them. After reading Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly, I learned that there can be another point of view for villains where they can chart their own destination in their life. Honestly, this book will take you to a whole new experience with villains since I started to accept that sometimes people make decisions for a reason and they still should get a second chance when things go wrong. The entire book focuses on Isabelle’s goals and how she changes from the beginning all the way to the end of the book even though there are other characters brought into the storyline. The plot has many twists and turns that will make you nervous about whether Isabelle will break the glass she is confined in. This book is mostly about finding who you really want to be, which I’m certain that people are still trying to figure out everyday of their lives. This book also does an excellent job of portraying the fact that there is more to beauty than your looks because I think many people will be relatable towards that fact and will be easily able to connect with the protagonist. The fact that Fate was portrayed as a real person was really interesting to me because normally fate is considered as a concept, not as a person who believes in pre-planned events. To sum up, I really enjoyed reading this book, and I know for a fact that all those fairy-tale lovers out there will love it too. I would rate this an 8/10.
