NOW’s Impact

The National Organization for Women (NOW) has played a pivotal role in women’s rights throughout history, with its core values being abortion and reproductive rights, economic equality for women, preventing violence against women, and lesbian/gay rights.
Something NOW impacted is Title IX. Title IX was passed to ensure that women received the same educational opportunities as men, even in higher education admissions and sports. NOW organized a national campaign to advocate for and raise awareness to pass a law providing women with equal educational opportunities as men. In addition to this, NOW helped escort patients into clinics for abortions if they wanted to and supported the Roe vs. Wade decision, which said that all state laws restricting abortion within the first three months of pregnancy were declared invalid due to privacy violations of women. NOW also supported ERA, which sought to end inequity between all people, regardless of sex/gender, especially in regards to employment, property, and more. NOW was the first national organization to approve of, advocate for, and endorse the legalization of abortion. NOW organized vigorous campaigns for the passing of ERA, and led many ratification campaigns. Last but not least, NOW led intense campaigns for the legislation of the Equal Pay Act. The Equal Pay Act prevents and protects people against wage discrimination based on sex/gender.
