LGBTQIA+ Scientists Saanvi Kunisetty

 LGBTQIA+ Scientists

Saanvi Kunisetty

In honor of pride month, here are a few LGBTQIA+ scientists who monumentally changed the world of science and made it what it is today:

Sally Ride

Sally Ride was NASA’s first ever female astronaut, and the NASA’s first lesbian astronaut too. At 32 years old, she still holds the record as the youngest American astronaut in space. Sally Ride revolutionized science, specifically astronomy, especially when she founded Sally Ride Science, a non-profit organization that promotes STEM literacy of girls most notably. Ride was known for maintaining a private life, and her relationship with her female partner was not revealed until her death.

Lynn Conway

Born as a male, Conway severely suffered from gender dysphoria. Over time, she intended to complete her gender transition, but this proved to be controversial to others. She was forced to leave MIT and was fired from her job at IBM because of her desired transition. She did later work at MIT, Xerox, and DARPA, working on a prodigious microchip design, and completed her transition.

George Washington Carver

Carver is believed to have been bisexual, as he was involved with a woman at one point, and later, a man. He is best known for his agricultural work with peanuts and sweet potatoes, as he specifically sought to improve soil quality in the South. Previously a slave, he found a way to pursue his academic goals, and become an agricultural scientist.
