June’s Supreme Court Cases
The beginning of June brings us a series of revolutionary court cases to be argued in the US Supreme Court. These cases will also offer us a better look at what to make of the newest justice, Amy Coney Barrett. Let’s take a look at a few of them.
California v. Texas:
Conservative lawyers and officials are, yet again, striving to get rid of the 2010 health care law known as Obamacare. Since Donald Trump and Congress got rid of the mandated tax, conservative lawyers have been arguing that it is no longer constitutional. Still, most people seem to think that the justices will not invalidate the law.
Fulton v. City of Philadelphia:
One of the Catholic social services agencies in Philadelphia asked that children do not be placed with potential foster parents who are same-sex couples, but Philadephia argued that this violated the city’s anti-discrimination laws. While in 2015, the court ruled for same-sex marriage, it is possible that the now-conservative court may still rule for the Catholic agency, and reduce the impact of the 2015 ruling.
Mahanoy Area School District v. B.L.:
This case addresses how schools can monitor online behavior of the students. Brandi Levy, a 14-year old in Pennsylvania, was not accepted onto the varsity cheerleading team, and when she posted a “vulgar” message on Snapchat regarding this, she was suspended from the junior varsity team. As of now, who the justices may side for seems very up in the air, but they do seem skeptical about the severity of Levy’s punishment.
