Facts About Juneteenth:
1) Juneteenth is celebrated each year on June 19th & celebrates the end of slavery in the United States
2) It is the first federal holiday since Martin Luther King Day to be signed into law, having already been recognized by many states across the country
3) Juneteenth is on June 19th since it is the day when federal troops freed the last remaining slaves in Galveston Texas, following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863
4) The holiday is celebrated in a number of ways including supporting Black-owned businesses, eating soul food dishes, and reflecting on how far we have come as a nation in terms of racial equality
5) It is also referred to as Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, and Liberation Day
6) The practice of slavery continued after the Civil War ended, but was finally outlawed by the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in December 1865
7) Juneteenth was declared by Texas as a state holiday in 1980
8) The Union's victory in the Civil War, allowed for black soldiers to be enlisted in the army
9) Emancipation Park in Houston, Texas which was bought by a group of African Americans for $1000 allowed for Juneteenth to be celebrated in spite of the Jim Crow laws in the 1870s
10) U.S. General Gordon Granger broke news of the Emancipation Proclamation under General Order No. 3 informing residents that all slaves would be freed
