Dolores Huerta
Saanvi Kunisetty
Dolores Huerta was one of the greatest female Latino American activists of all time. She worked alongside Cesar Chavez for quite some time, and they were both known for their dedication, passion, and vigor toward the cause that they were fighting for. Huerta actually did not begin her career as an activist, though. She went through many different careers, and was even a teacher. Huerta stopped teaching after witnessing the devastating living conditions of her students, many of them being children of farmworkers. She became determined to dedicate her time toward improving the lives of these laborers. Her activism did not begin with Chavez, but actually with the Agricultural Workers Association (AWA). One of the group’s goals was to have non-citizen migrant workers receive pensions and additional public aid. Another goal was to provide driver’s tests and voting ballots written in the Spanish language. Huerta moved to New York in 1968, where she encountered the state’s feminist movement and the renowned feminist Gloria Steinem. Huerta hence became a Latina feminist, working to include working women of color in the previously mostly white feminist movement. Ultimately, she improved the living conditions and lives of many Latino Americans across the country, especially women, who previously were not given much thought.
