The Future of Masks
Saanvi Kunisetty
Today, just taking a walk down the street to the local grocery store, you will see several people around, all with masks on (hopefully). This is what has become our reality- masked faces with slivers of eyes and foreheads peeking out from above. But what happens when, sometime in the future, the era of the COVID-19 pandemic comes to an end? Will the sight of masked faces remain the norm, or is there hope of seeing the faces of others again? As of now, we can’t be completely sure. We do know that during this time, masks have statistically been proven to reduce the people affected by COVID in an area, as they have the ability to trap many air particles and things as such. Of course, they can’t trap all pathogens. But, once this pandemic is over, the debate remains as to whether it’s worth wearing masks to prevent something like this from happening again. Many people are quite against it, due to the cons such as communication, lack of comfort, and even possible microplastic inhalation. Others feel that safety and protection is the utmost priority. In fact, several nations, not including the United States, are very experienced and used to wearing masks commonly. For example, in Hong Kong, people wear masks all the time during the flu season. Hence, when masks were mandated during the pandemic, the people of Hong Kong took to the regulations with ease. The story was unfortunately very different in our country.
