Some of the Science World’s Most Intriguing Things

Why do we study science? What is it about science that captures the interests of so many inquisitors, young and old alike? Science opens up a whole new world that allows us to observe and analyze why the universe works the way it does, and aids us in discovering the uncanny occurences of nature. Among these are some of the science world’s most intriguing things.
Supersaturated Solutions: When experimenting with dissolving, it is known that there is a limit to the amount of solute (the thing being dissolved) you can dissolve in a solvent (the thing doing the dissolving). When this limit is exceeded, supersaturated solutions are created, which behave very absurdly. By adding a seed crystal to the solution, a crystal will start to from in the solution itself, and will spread throughout the solution until the crystals have settled, and the solution is stable.
Doppler Effect: This effect relates to all waves, especially sound. Have you ever sat in a car as an ambulance sped away from you? You may have noticed that the farther it went away, the lower in pitch (basically frequency) the siren sounded. If the same ambulance was speeding toward you, the pitch would sound higher the closer it came to you.
Looking Back in Time: Light actually allows us to look back in time! The farther away an object is from us, the more time it takes the light from the object to reach us. For example, when the Sun is emitting light, we don’t actually receive that light until approximately 8 minutes later. If a telescope takes a picture of an object in space that is 50 million light years away from us, we would be looking at how that object looked 50 million years ago. Ultimately, we are looking back in time.
