Avatar: The Last Airbender review of the show by Chandler Wang

 Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Avatar is perhaps the show I've heard the most praise for ever. Everybody seems to love the show, praising its story, its characters, its lessons, and its depth. I watched the show expecting it to be incredibly good, but by the end, although I did enjoy the show, it didn't live up to its hype at all. For me, the show was held back a lot by what it was - a children's show from the 2000's. It felt pretty outdated, was often annoyingly childish, and had many aspects that may have been unique for its time, but are pretty cliche today. Much of the meaning that supporters of the show claimed it had seemed to either be incredibly blatant, for the young audience, or was sniffed out by the rabid fanbase and would never be noticed by an ordinary viewer. Most of the characters are fairly straightforward, and the story wasn't really unique or special. With all that being said, at least by the end of the show, I rather enjoyed the series. The story, although it might have been a little too typical, was interesting and enjoyable, many characters were likable despite being simple, and the show was quite funny at times. There is at least one character whose story is fairly interesting and unique, and if the show had only been about him, it might have lived up to expectations, because when the show was about him it often had much more meaning and uniqueness. Overall, the show was pretty solid, especially for a children's show, and despite it being underwhelming compared to expectations, I can see how it became so popular. 8/10.
