My thoughts on music:
Music
is a complex idea. It is more complex than quantum physics, neuroscience or
aerospace engineering. Music connects humans in ways that words cannot. Music
can make the worst tragedies seem bearable and the highest of highs feel
happier. Music can be shared between people and create love between them. Music
can divide people and generate hatred. It can change people’s lives, sometimes
for the better, sometimes for the worse. It comes in infinite varieties and
possibilities. Music completely surrounds us and makes up a strong pillar of
society. It is something that almost all people can share. It can be a
destructive force that can rip apart the things we once thought were truth. It
can create emotions, thoughts and conversations so powerful that they change
lives of thousands. Music is extremely complex.
That said,
it is the easiest for people to understand and connect with. Everyone has their
favorite songs and artists. People have the songs that they cling on to when
they are going through hard times. They have the songs that carry them to
better times. People know songs that overflow them with memories. Music is an
inevitable part of everyone’s lives. It can make or break a person. It is even
more powerful than words or actions. A simple melody can carry the weight and
force of an ocean. It opens up people’s minds and provides a link between
people, no matter how different they are.
Music is a
global phenomenon. Whoever hummed that first melody or struck that first chord
created something much bigger than themselves. Every artist that makes music
now does the same. They create something that belongs to so many people. It
belongs to the young girl singing along to her favorite song in her bedroom. It
belongs to the old man who cherishes the song because it reminds him of his
grandkids. It can cause emotions that are too big to name.
So notice
music. Embrace all of the music in your life. You should truly enjoy singing at
the top of your lungs in the shower. You should adore humming a little tune to
yourself at the supermarket. Really think about that little beat you tap with
your pencil when you’re doing your work. Take in all of it. Experience the
wonder that comes from noticing the unstoppable role music plays in all of our
lives. It is the one true thing that connects all of us.
