Elegy, a poem by Abhinav Aradhi

Elegy

I don’t want to take up your time.

I’d rather not be a bother.

So if you could listen, just for a minute,

That would be an absolute wonder.

I’d like to say that I’m grateful,

For all the things that all of you have done.

Made my life like a spinning saucer,

Floating away into the heavenly celestic.

Don’t mind me, just putting the chairs away.

I’m not that great at standing up for myself.

You all have been so great about doing it for me.

So let me stand up solitarily this one time, alright?

Do you have that rope we used last week?

When I fell off all the cliffs I tried to climb?

When I felt my weary hands burning off,

As a rugged rope cut me by the second?

Could you help me reach the fan?

I love how it just spins around, till you flick the switch.

One moment, it’s a wayward warrior of life.

The next, a dead little corpse.

Doesn’t this necklace suit me?

I love how it loops around my neck, like Hell wrapped around my whole body.

It’s rough and calloused and knotted,

Like the piggy bank of emotions I call my brain.

Would you mind putting this last chair away?

I’d do it, but I’m tied up at the moment.

Again, thanks for driving me here.

I’d say it out loud, but I’m tied up at the moment.

You’ve gotten me to this position,

And for that I couldn’t be more thankful.

Well, you better head home, huh?

This room’s supposed to be locked by now.

I can’t come outside tomorrow,

So don’t bother coming around.

I’ll put a note on my door to remind you.

Meanwhile, I’ll be forever asleep, safe and sound.
