What is important in choosing your career? By Varshiini Ramesh

What is important in choosing your career?

Well, let’s start with a rhetorical question: What do you want to be in your life? You might’ve already figured that out, or you still might not know what you really want to be in your life, but that’s okay. I feel that choosing your future career is hard for high schoolers since it’s actually when they’re exploring what they like and don’t like. To be honest, most of us change our minds often and it’s kind of hard coming to a decision for some people. For instance, I haven’t decided what I want to pursue yet, but I wanted to share some information about the factors that can contribute to choosing your career. To start off, I believe that now we need to figure out what our interests/hobbies are because our future career may contain our hobbies, and it can actually help us enjoy working and contribute to creating advancements in the world. You would also need to figure out whether you would want to work outdoors with many other people or by yourself (extrovert or introvert) since your career may involve you working “hands-on” with others. For instance, if you want to be a teacher, you’d have to know that you’ll be more sociable and interactive. Again, it’s based on whether you’re comfortable with working in groups or by yourself, but in the end, your decision has to be based on what you like. For example, if you’re kind of a competitive person and you like trying to pitch in strategies to win games, then the business field can be an option for your choice of career. However, personality is just one small factor, so your career isn’t solely based on that, and your personality can apply to many different careers, not just one. Next, we should start looking back on our talents and strengths because we choose a career to pursue so we can prioritize more, and to enjoy using our talent(s) to help the world. When you choose a career where you can’t utilize most of your strengths, it will mostly be difficult for you to keep that as your occupation. Finally, your values will have a major impact on your career because you can’t really force yourself to do something for the rest of your life if you don’t like it. Money and where you want to live can be considered a factor when choosing your career, but then again, it’s for you to decide what values are important to you. For example, I consider commitment as one of my values, and it will definitely affect my career since I need to think about if the career that I choose is worth working for. To sum up, you may or may not know what you want to pursue yet, and that’s totally alright. Although, in my opinion, these factors will definitely have an impact on our decision about what career we think will help us and our families in the future, so I would recommend keeping them in mind and slowly make your decision soon.
