 Why I Recommend Reading “Of Mice And Men” By John Steinbeck

“Of Mice And Men”by John Steinbeck is a short novel that is filled with dramatic moments, thought provoking scenes, and it teaches you important lessons. Even though the novel is short it still impacts the reader emotionally and goes over serious topics that are still relevant today even though the story takes place during The Great Depression. The story is written in a way that is easy to read and follow, but the meaning behind the writing is important and thoughtful. 

One of the reasons I would recommend this novella is because it shows many important lessons. One lesson the story teaches is how important friendship is. The two main characters in the story, George and Lennie, are best friends and care for each other deeply. Their bond shows how people rely on others during hard and difficult times and I think many people can relate to having a friend that can rely on you and you can rely on them. Another important lesson that this story teaches us is how some dreams are unattainable even with hard work. Many characters in this story had goals that they wanted to reach and even though they worked hard they couldn’t because of something outside of their control. This shows that disappointment is something everyone faces and how people’s lives can get ruined by something outside of their control. 

Another reason I would recommend reading “Of Mice And Men” is the way the story is written makes it interesting. The story is mostly dialogue which is unique from other stories written in this time period because most stories had a lot of narration and description of the setting. However, in “Of Mice And Men” many lines that are said by the characters are used to describe the setting that the characters are in. This way of writing the story makes the story keep on moving and it makes the story interesting to read as well as making the story more memorable. 

The story also shows us who life was like during The Great Depression. It allows us to see how hard it was for migrant workers to find work during this time period. This time period also gives reasoning for why some characters acted the way they did. It also allows us to see the true nature of people because many characters in the story acted for what benefited them, which was reasonable considering the time period because they had to do anything that would help them survive. 

Over all, “Of Mice And Men” is a great novella to read if you are looking for a short book that is engaging, has meaningful lessons, and thought provoking scenes. The story allows you to see how difficult it was to live during The Great Depression by going through the life of the characters. All of these factors are what make “Of Mice And Men” such an amazing story to read.
