The Negative Side to Social Media by: Krisha Shah

The Negative Side to Social Media

by: Krisha Shah

Social media is becoming more popular in the last few years. The growth of platforms such as Instagram and the introduction of new platforms such as TikTok have contributed to this. These platforms have many negative side effects, which includes addiction. The Scroll Act is a form of addiction and involves scrolling through short videos for hours on end. This reduces individuals productivity and has many negative mental health side effects. Individuals began comparing themselves with people on social media which causes depression and suicide. Additionally, individuals are wasting their time on these platforms instead of sleeping for 8 hours or going to work. These negative effects are taking a toll on individuals, their minds, and their bodies. As a teen, I have experienced and seen all these effects in myself and my friends. It has decreased my productivity and negatively contributed to mental health. Although social media is often used to escape reality, it should be used carefully to avoid addiction and all the negative aspects that come with it. I believe that there should be limits to the amount of time people spend on social media to prevent addiction and the decline of mental health.
