Barbie Movie Review by Vennela Japa

 Barbie Review

I watched the highly anticipated Barbie movie on Thursday, an advanced screening. I walked in

with my pink sweater and accessories, thinking I’d see a fun movie full of pink and glitter. What I

didn’t expect was a movie that almost made me cry. On multiple occasions, this seemingly

unserious movie brought in a new, easy-to-understand view on feminism. Through fun visuals

and an engaging simple plot that could be understood and enjoyed by everyone from a small

child to an old woman, they spread what feminism really was. Some critique the movie’s

simplistic, almost naive nature of explaining feminism, but it truly was the best way to do it. It

couldn’t be too complicated, or the children wouldn’t understand. It couldn’t be too simplistic, or

the adults wouldn’t take it as seriously. They brought the perfect balance. This movie had me

thinking about the patriarchy, my relationship with my mother, and just simply life. How odd it is

that humans even exist and how much our world is flawed yet beautiful at the same time. How

much needs to change, and how much we have improved upon. I would highly recommend

watching this movie, as its impact on the media will show for years to go on. I’m proud that I got

to experience it in theaters and I can’t wait to tell everyone about it when I’m an old woman. (A

beautiful old woman that is, and you’ll understand that reference once you watch the movie,

which you absolutely need to.) I would like to speak more on it, but I’m afraid to spoil it. Just

know that this movie was absolutely worth the promotion and the anticipation, absolutely worth

the entire world talking about it. Thank you Margot Robbie for bringing Barbie to life, and for

Greta Gerwig for creating this world that so eloquently told what it needed to tell. Oh, and for

Ryan Gosling for well, everything you brought to this movie.
