Black Coffee Book Review by Difan Li

Black Coffee Book Review by Difan Li

Black Coffee by Agatha Christie was originally a play written for the stage that was later novelised and published. It is a suspenseful and thrilling mystery or detective book and contains numerous clues that only come together to reveal the secret at the end of the novel. Agatha Christie, the queen of crime and mystery, displays her skills in weaving an incredibly intricate plot. The complex layers of family feuds and the introduction of characters that seem to have no real purpose build a web of mystery that the reader will find themselves trapped within. I greatly enjoy Agatha Christie’s novels as it seems her stories build an impossible circumstance, and it is at the last moment, the moment of reveal, everything is able to fall into place. Black Coffee is no exception to this. Concerning the murder of a wealthy old man, which seems to have occurred right beneath everyone’s noses, each suspect has a potential motive but also various alibis. From a suspicious and youthful secretary, to odd foreign relations, it is up to the detective, Hercule Poirot, to sort out who the real murderer is as well as a serious of other mysteries within the family. I would recommend this book to any mystery fan, especially those who are already familiar with Agatha Christie’s work. They will find this book to hold all the well-loved characteristics of her writing style and the unique identity of each of her stories as well.
