Pride and Prejudice Movie Review by Difan Li

Pride and Prejudice Movie Review by Difan Li

Based on the 1813 novel by Jane Austen, the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film is a masterful piece of cinematography, in the acting, the visual appeal, and the flow and deliverance of the plot. Filled with a variety of characters and a wide range of personalities and roles, it is easy to identify with the people portrayed in the movie and relate to their struggles. From pressure due to family and societal expectations to troubles with money, several parallels can be found between this movie and the modern day and age, despite the timeline being set in the 18th century.

The movie questions the values of love and marriage and the role of women in society through displaying the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, one of the elder siblings of a family of girls as she is faced with the pressure to attain an advantageous marriage to support her younger siblings. As part of the romance genre, the protagonist is also thrown into a series of misunderstandings with the wealthy but seemingly snobbish Mr. Darcy, but she slowly discovers that he is not as she originally perceived. Though they face many obstacles and barriers between them, both Jane Austen and this film are able to convey the ability for perseverance and (though cliché), love, to conquer all. I would highly recommend both this film and this for anyone hoping to consume a great story that, though lacking in fast-paced action, packs an emotional punch and is intriguing and beautifully drawn out.
