Oliver Twist Movie Review by Difan Li

Oliver Twist is a 2005 film adaption of Charles Dickens’ widely known 1838 novel. Though the movie deviates from the original plotline, I can definitely say that it is incredibly well-produced and is still able to convey the messages that the author originally intended. The movie follows young and innocent Oliver Twist, an orphan, as he struggles to survive in the harsh world of 19th-century London. After brutal treatment in an orphans’ workhouse and being sold as an apprentice, he is initiated into a gang of thieves in London. They introduce him to the darker side of London life, teaching him to become a pickpocket, and the movie shows the impact of destitution and poverty that was often overlooked and ignored. Through a twist of fate, Oliver is taken in by a kindly old gentleman, but even as his luck seems to change, terrible plots are brewing and Oliver is placed in even greater danger. Through this film, Dickens’ original motive, to bring awareness of the conditions of poverty, is shown. Though we are no longer in 19th-century London and many aspects of Oliver Twist’s world no longer exist, the lessons from both book and movie are still relevant today. I would highly recommend this movie as it left me thinking long after watching it, and has proven to be both an incredible and intriguing story.
