"That which we obtain too easily, we esteem too lightly" analysis by Anusha Seeri

That which we obtain too easily, we esteem too lightly

I believe that we only value what we struggle for. This is because the struggle is something that we do not forget, it stays in our minds. All the work we put in to get something will always be remembered when we think back to where we started.

An example of something that someone would struggle for is to buy a house. You would value this because you have taken a lot of time to save up the money, and you put the work in for years to make it possible to buy it. On the other hand, you would not value a bag of chips because you did not have to struggle for months to make enough money to buy it. It is something that you did not work as hard for so you would not value it as much as a house.

As said in this quote by Thomas Paine, “That which we obtain too easily, we esteem too lightly. It is dearness only which gives everything its value.” you see that it says that the things that we obtain too easily such as a bag of chips we esteem it too lightly or we do not value it. But something we hold dear to us such as a house, we value because we struggled for it.

To conclude, we see that the things that we hold dear and we struggle for are things we value and really remember. When we get something so easily we don't see it and value it. This is why we only value what we struggle for.
