Movie Recommendation: Forrest Gump by Ria Purohit

 Movie Recommendation: Forrest Gump

I am not a fan of the nonfiction genre; I find it tedious to read books or watch media related to it. So it is just that impressive when a piece of media can twist the nonfiction genre with fiction elements to appeal to my sense of taste. Being able to make characters and put them in a historically accurate setting is an impressive writing skill. That is exactly what the movie, Forrest Gump, does flawlessly.

Forrest Gump is about a young man named Forrest who has an IQ less than the average person, and he is trying to just make it through his life with the help of his mother and his childhood friend, Jenny. The movie takes the viewer through all stages of history throughout the 60s-90s, like school integration in the South, the Vietnam War, etc., and shows the viewers how instrumental Forrest was to the success of so many things, like the popularity of Bubba Gump Shrimp, the creation of the smiley face, and many more. These achievements aren’t accurate; I am sure other people got credit for being amazing in those fields. But the writers managed to create a character that embodies the cultural achievements of that time period.

This movie helped me see the full outline of what happened during the latter half of the 20th century, and allowed me to relate some of the things I watched to history class. Along with the historical accuracy, it also has heart, and is rooted within the relationship between Forrest and Jenny, and how their lives went on very different trajectories. It is what let me watch and rewatch the movie several times. Now, it’s one of my comfort movies that I turn on whenever I am having a rough day. I know it’s a popular film, but it’s worth reiterating its worth. I hope you take my recommendation to heart and enjoy the movie!
